Hi, I’m Carolyn Sutherby, PhD, LCSW, a licensed clinical social worker with nearly 25 years of experience working with children, families, and women in a variety of settings—including child welfare, the criminal/legal system, healthcare, prevention programs, and private practice.
I specialize in supporting women with mood disorders, substance use issues, and co-occurring challenges, especially those involved in the child welfare system or navigating the criminal justice system. My work is trauma-informed and grounded in the belief that healing happens through connection, education, and empowerment.
I also provide parenting education for caregivers raising children or adolescents with mental health or behavioral concerns, and offer both individual and family therapy based on the needs of each client and family system.
In addition to my clinical work, I have a strong interest in supporting Highly Sensitive People (HSP) and Highly Sensitive Children (HSC)—a trait often referred to as Sensory Processing Sensitivity. As both a clinician and a parent of an HSC, I understand the unique challenges and gifts that come with high sensitivity, and I enjoy helping families better understand and support this trait. If you’d like to learn more about HSPs, I recommend visiting https://hsperson.com.
I earned my PhD in Social Work from Michigan State University, and I bring both academic training and real-world experience to every session. My goal is always to meet clients where they are and to walk alongside them with compassion and practical tools for growth.
